SSENSE and the CCA present “Retail Apocalypse: The Epilogue”

“Retail Apocalypse: The Epilogue” is a short fil.moe">film created in collaboration between the CCA and SSENSE as part of Chapter III: Renaissance of our exhibition Retail Apocalypse on view through 15 January 2023. More details: https://www.cca.qc.ca/retail-apocalypse
Chapter III: Renaissance engages with the museum itself as a site of cultural production and consumption, and the CCA Octagonal gallery poses as a retail space under transformation. Latent within visual culture is the interplay between techniques of art-making, techniques of display, and techniques of exhibition.

For the occasion, the CCA invited SSENSE, the global technology platform headquartered in Montreal and operating at the intersection of culture, community, and commerce, to co-produce Retail Apocalypse: The Epilogue. The short film investigates new approaches to retail at a time when the digital world is disrupting all commonplace notions and practices of shopping.

Directed by Emmanuel Mauriès-Rinfret, and with interviews by Jack Self, Niels Olsen, Fredi Fischli and Irene Chin, the short film examines this topic through conversations with thought leaders in the worlds of architecture and fashion, as well as via a visual exploration of the architecture and infrastructure at SSENSE.

We also published a series of some of these conversations online. We started with “Front-line Fashion”—Justin Louis speaks with Irene Chin about how fashion tells Indigenous stories and takes up space. “On Logistics Landscapes”—Fredi Fischli, Niels Olsen, and Irene Chin in conversation with Tadeáš Říha and Kateřina Frejlachová, “Flirting With Fulfillment”—Samir Bantal interviewed by Jack Self on the consumer’s search for meaning in contemporary retail environments, “Commercial Proximities”— Jack Self in discussion with Samuel Ross, on how commercial design builds contemporary commons. Next, we will feature another interview by Jack Self in conversation with Hilary Sample.
